HOW TO SURVIVE THE AUTOSUB 2010 BURNING MAN KITCHEN!
Created by Dreamy Jen, Posted on 08/24/2010

FOOD PREP

MID-DAY DRINKS
(non-alcoholic)
In drink cooler mix water, ice, juice (cranberry w/ splash of lime)

SALAD
Unless otherwise specified use 6-7 heads of Romaine lettuce, mix up a coordinating dressing, toss in some veggies if we’ve got ‘em. And your done, let’s not make things too complicated!

MILK
Fresh milk is for drinking, Parmalat/Soy is for cereal, etc.

Wash veggies with a damp paper towel. **Peel onions directly into compost bag. They are very MOOPy.

Whoever is cooking or frying in kitchen (esp Bacon) cannot walk away with heat on and fat spattering!

Keep bread in the shade! ANY sun and it will MOLD.

DO NOT throw out foil pans!

Coolers

Coolers are labeled with a list of contents so you don’t have to open them all to find what you are looking for. Ice melts very quickly in the desert (imagine that!) please only open the coolers briefly.

When you open cheese, cold cuts, bacon, etc. put it in a zip lock bag before returning it to the cooler to prevent samonelia and soggy sammiches.

EVERYTHING SHOULD BE IN ZIPLOCK BAGS IN THE COOLERS!

Food for general use will be found in the top coolers. Bottom coolers are for meals and should only be opened by Chefs during meal prep. If you need to move the coolers for any reason, please put them back where you found them.

If you use fresh veggies don’t feel compelled to ‘finish it’ as we have a limited supply. Put the rest in a ziplock in a cooler and add that to the label describing the contents of that cooler.

MELT WATER

Clean melt water will be set aside when the ice is replenished. Use this for all your non-drinking/sanitizing needs. Use the metal scoop to take water out then pour over the sink.

DRINKING WATER
If you think you are hungry, drink some water & wait 10 minutes.

Hunger or craving salt is a sign of dehydration (but do eat!)

To refill water jug, find someone who knows how to use the sink regulator, turn the spout around and fill from behind the counter.

COFFEE & Tea
1. Boil water (9-10 liters) – may need to be done in two batches
2. Put ½ bag (1/2 lb) coffee into ‘official’ coffee filter (very fine filter)
3. Pour 1st ½ of water through grounds directly into large brown coffee container.
4. Change coffee grounds – throw out 1st 1/2. Pour rest of bag into filter.
5. Pour 2nd ½ of water over grounds.
6. Boil 4-5 liters of water for hot tea, pour into bowl with a lip and then into 2 hot tea thermoses.

DISHWASHING SET UP
1) water w/ little bit of soap
2) plain water for rinsing
3) water with a capful of bleach

Scrape plates before washing to minimize solid waste in the grey water. When changing the water stretch a stocking over the designated bucket and strain it before dumping into exap pond. Hang the stocking to dry next to compost.

  • Personal dishes are washed by campers! Bring your dishes back to your tent!!!
Dinner clean up crew is only responsible for equipment used for cooking.

Where do I find…………?

One roll of paper towels lives on a bungee by the sink. The rest are next to the shelf that says “Don’t eat!”

Pots and pans in tub by table top burners

Cutting boards and bowls are under prep table.

Cooking utensils divided big and small in bins under prep table.
